Single Page Web Applications (SPAs)

Help! What is this “jQuery” I keep seeing that everyone keeps talking about with websites. Should any of it matter to me? The answer is yes, only if to comprehend the concept behind interactivity.

I sense web designers and developers shuddering at the thought of taking on a client who indicates they want a functionally “cool” website. The thing is, like me you’ve probably been spoiled by browsing internet (I do for my day job!). When it comes to procuring your own, you can’t help but want the “cool” part of website interactivity, and it’s understandable that you don’t know where that comes from.

The dynamic part of websites, that load without having to refresh the page, all comes from something called jQuery.

Building Single Page Applications With jQuery’s Best Friends

Hey guys. Today we’re going to take a look at how you can build a single-page application (SPA) supporting graceful degradation using some of jQuery’s Best

Juliana Payson‘s insight:

(Did you even understand that excerpt?) Hehe, so basically SPAs are web applications or websites, which “run” in the same page without requiring a reload for further navigation. Simply said if you watch the url in the address bar it doesn’t change when you interact and click through to different parts of the web page, you aren’t even reloading a page! Yet, a new apparent web page seems to load, instantaneously, either as if it was already there loaded into the cache, or queried from the server depending on your input field. Data is retrieved from the web server on demand.

Now I wish I could have a web SPA, something to make my own website look a little cooler than a standard template… Here is a registry of some cool interactive ideas or “Plugins”, chunks of code that can embellish your website with a little bit of SPA

You can start fantasizing now about all the different elements of interactivity that you could have added into your website. One of the funniest things I’ve always thought is why is a dynamic drop down menu function called “Superfish” ? Take a look at the roster of top plugins being forked here on the registry, and you’ll start to learn the ideal search terms to plug into your WordPress plugin search to find the Plugin that will give you the type of dynamic appearance or functionality that you want.

With hundreds upon hundreds (if not thousands) of new plugins being released this year – what a great jQuery year it has been.

Juliana Payson‘s insight:

Ok… prepare to die in code. If you’re a newb (and I always consider myself to be, even though I’ve had some experience at tweaking code) then absorb these amazing examples of interactive functionality. I hope it allows you to understand  and describe more about what it is you want from your website! –  Just head over to eLance or something and hire someone to implement it for you! ( I always choose the easy way out these days then point my coders to the source material I want.)

If you’re freelancing your coding abilities then feel free to raise your hand here, comment, offer your opinion etc to help our audience of new website owners. – Juliana
